- Meet in a public place. Select a busy, well-lit, and public location, such as a coffee shop or a police station parking lot, to complete the transaction. Avoid going to the other person’s home or inviting them to yours, especially for an initial meeting.
- Bring a companion. For extra safety, bring a friend or family member with you to the meeting.
- Only accept cash (or a verified digital payment). Demand cash for transportable items. If the item is high-value, meet inside a bank so you can deposit the money immediately and confirm its authenticity. For digital payments via apps like Cash App or Apple Cash, send a small test payment first to ensure you have the correct account. Do not proceed if the other party insists on a different, less secure payment method.
- Don’t release the item until payment is confirmed. As a seller, never hand over the item until you have the cash in hand or the funds have cleared in your bank account.
- Beware of fake documents. Be skeptical of buyers who send fake “proof of payment” or identity documents to pressure you into releasing an item before the money has actually cleared.
